The ancestors of the Kiger horse were introduced to this continent by the Spanish Conquistadors in the middle 1500’s They are genetically linked to the Spanish, Iberian and Barb horses (Lusitano, Sorraia, and Andulasion). Kigers are renown for their strength, soundness, intelligent minds and striking dun coloration .

There are perhaps 1000 – 1500 Kigers registered in the United States and Canada under various registries, with maybe 100 – 150 Kigers located east of the Mississippi River. They have been used for ranch horses, working cow horses, and for reining, cutting, eventing, trail and endurance. They have been recognized by the American Sport Horse Association, and may be used in the development of the American Warmblood. They have been crossed with Arabians to combine the stamina of the Arabs with the soundness, strength and calm sensibility of the Kiger to produce exceptional endurance mounts.
